Dr. Ramanujan Samavedy is a native of India, where he earned an MBBS, the equivalent of a Doctor of Medicine (MD), at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry University in 1992.
He relocated to the United States for an internship at Long Island College Hospital in New York, residency at Indiana University Medical Center and fellowships at Indiana University Medical Center and University of Wisconsin.
He completed a year of specialized training in therapeutic endoscopy of the bile duct and pancreas, and therapy of esophagus precancer and early cancerous lesions.
Before joining Gastrointestinal Associates, he served as faculty at both Indiana University and the University of Tennessee for 18 years. He was awarded the Gold Star teaching award by residents at Indiana University.
Dr. Samavedy established the endoscopic ultrasound services at University of Tennessee Medical Center and served as the medical director of endoscopy for seven years. He also served as an integral part of the UT Cancer Institute as a tumor board member to develop evaluation algorithms for GI cancers, help establish the liver and pancreas cancer service line, provide therapeutic endoscopy service and teach and give rounds for residents. He twice has been recognized by the Guardian Angel program at UT Medical center for his compassion in the care of his patients and has been voted “Top Doc” by Cityview magazine every year since 2013.
Dr. Samavedy is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in both gastroenterology and internal medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
He practices the full spectrum of gastroenterology care with additional special interest in GI cancers, as well as diseases of the colon, esophagus, stomach, pancreas and bile duct.
Dr. Samavedy and his wife, Nalini, live in Knoxville with their daughter. In his spare time, he likes to hike, travel and play recreational tennis.
