Dr. Maria B. Newman’s journey in medicine is a testament to her diverse cultural background and passion for healthcare. Born in Seville, Spain, and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Newman’s early experiences shaped her global perspective on medicine and patient care. Her family’s move to northern Virginia during her teenage years added to her rich multicultural experience. Pursuing her love for Spanish literature, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia before returning to Puerto Rico to embark on her medical career at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
Dr. Newman’s medical training took her from Puerto Rico to Texas, where she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. Her commitment to advancing in the field of gastroenterology led her to the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she completed a rigorous three-year fellowship under the auspices of a National Institutes of Health research grant.
Throughout her career, Dr. Newman has been an active member of the leading gastroenterological associations, including the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Her membership in these prestigious organizations underscores her commitment to staying at the forefront of gastroenterology, continually integrating the latest research and clinical practices into her patient care.
Dr. Newman is married to Dr. Ed Newman, a distinguished nephrologist, and together they have two children, Julia and Jack. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Newman cherishes spending time with her family, indulging in her love for reading, and exploring new destinations through travel.
